Teen pregnancies in Kenya

This triple threat is due to the new HIV infections, gender, and sexual violence and adolescent pregnancies witnessed.

According to data from the National Aids Control Council, Kenya ranks third globally in terms of teenage pregnancies, with a rise in both HIV infections and teenage pregnancies.

“We deliver At least 12,000 women every month and out of this, 10% are mothers between 10-19 years. In the last year, we have seen almost 6,000 teen pregnancies in Nairobi and 50% of them end up being HIV positive,” Dr. Ouma stated.

According to current data, at least 72 percent of all new infections originate in counties such as Kisumu, Kisii, Nandi, Laikipia, and Tana River. Furthermore, adolescents and adults aged 15-29 account for at least 61 percent of all new adult HIV infections.

The country is still attempting to reduce the number of HIV/AIDS cases as well as teenage pregnancies, which are regarded as a ticking time bomb prior to Vision 2030.

"Kenya has the third-highest teen pregnancies where one in every five adolescents aged 15-19 are already mothers or pregnant with their first child,” Health Permanent Secretary Susan Mwachache stated.
