“The government is looking into ways and means of addressing the cost of unga to bring it down so that consumers can afford it, stated Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya.

The loan is part of the Ksh. 177.5 billion ($1.5 billion) Africa Emergency Production Facility, an AfDB program to address the continent's impending food crisis that has been exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The financing is also expected to offer trade finance guarantees and engage the private sector to support the fertilizer program by guaranteeing supply.

An estimated 650,000 farmers are anticipated to get the loan directly, while 2.8 million people are anticipated to benefit from the facility.

It is likely that the credit facility's proceeds will be used to increase cereal and oil seed production by over 1.5 million metric tonnes in the next two years.

Beginning with the months of October through December, which covers the short-rains period, the Ministry of Agriculture is anticipated to use the facility to give farmers affordable fertilizer and seeds.
