Industrial Gas Leak In India Leads To Hospitalization Of 87 Workers

On Tuesday night, employees at a facility in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh's Atchyutapuram district reported experiencing nausea and vomiting.

On Wednesday, the channel India Today stated that no fatalities had been reported and that everything was under control.

According to NDTV, this comes after about 178 female employees became hospitalized in early June, following a gas leak at a laboratory in the Atchutapuram neighborhood of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, the same region.

In 1984, gas spilled from a pesticide facility in the city of Bhopal, located in central India, and became one of the biggest industrial disasters in Indian history.

The spill affected led to the deaths of close to 3,500 locals who lived close to the affected.

To this day, many are still affected as some children are still born with deformities, webbed hands and feet, and stunted growth due to the gas that their mothers were exposed to.

In 2020, a gas leak at a chemical plant in Visakhapatnam, an industrial port city in the same state, resulted in at least five fatalities and hundreds of hospitalizations.

A joint committee was formed by the government of Andhra Pradesh to investigate the occurrence and determine what caused the gas leak.
