In the letter, Cherera acknowledged President Ruto for granting her the opportunity to serve in the body. She also revealed that after consulting with her lawyers and family members, she decided to resign.

"I sincerely thank His excellency William Samoei Ruto, President of Kenya for the opportunity accorded to me to serve the republic, God bless," she stated.

Cherera stated that during her tenure as commissioner, she performed her duties diligently and meticulously, and she made a concerted effort to assist the commission in dealing with corporate governance issues under difficult circumstances.

According to the letter, Cherera stated that during her period as vice-chairperson in the IEBC, she always advocated for fair and equal treatment of the staff but unfortunately was misjudged.

"As vice chairperson, I always advocated for fair treatment and equal opportunity for all staff," she added.

Cherera's resignation comes a few days after President William Ruto suspended the four IEBC commissioners.

"Having received and considered the petition of the National Assembly and in the exercise of the prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government by Article 251 of the Constitution, I do hereby direct as follows: THAT Cherera, Wanderi, Masit and Nyang’aya, being members of the IEBC, be and are hereby suspended from office with immediate effect," the letter stated.
