Thugs in Turkana attacked a passenger vehicle on the Kitale-Lodwar highway, injuring two; the driver and a Columbian woman missionary.

Highway Attack In Turkana County

The Turkana South Sub County Police Commander, Robert Kibuchi, confirmed the attack saying the passenger vehicle was on its way to Kitale when the thugs intercepted.

"One kilometer past the KWS gate in Kainuk, the driver of the PSV belonging to Lodwar Classic Shuttle encountered armed bandits, who first tried to stop him, but he sped off, prompting them to shoot at the vehicle where they injured the two," said the police commander.

The thugs injured the driver’s thigh and shot the woman missionary in the passenger seat on the leg. The woman was airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment as the bullet was lodged in her leg.

Preliminary studies show that the Columbian missionary was the thugs’ main focus, which might have been the lady’s money.

Kibuchi further stated that there had been no vehicle attacks in the past three years and assured motorists of safety as the police probed into the attack incident.

"We have stepped up our security surveillance and patrols along the highway between Ortum in West Pokot County and Lokichar in Turkana County to assure motorists of their security as we kick off investigations into the isolated insecurity incident," he said.

The police commander also urged the Ministry of Interior to increase security along the county’s border with Pokot to contain border attacks between the two counties. He asked for police to be situated in the area as the bandits target remote areas that they consider difficult for police officers to access.
