"And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming," director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a letter to fans.

"Squid Game" is a South Korean fictional drama in which contestants in desperate need of money compete in lethal children's games to win cash prizes.

Hwang also hinted at new characters and plot developments in the upcoming second season.

"The man in the suit with ddakji might be back," the director stated.

According to the letter, viewers will also meet Cheol-su, the "boyfriend" of the show's infamous animatronic doll, Young-hee.
In October, Netflix told a publication that "Squid Game" was the company's "biggest-ever series at launch." It is the platform's first Korean series to reach No. 1 in the US, with 1.65 billion hours of viewing in the 28 days following its release.

"It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series ever." Hwang said in the letter.

Hwang confirmed last year that a second season of the show would be produced.

"There's been so much demand, love, and attention for a season two. So I feel I have no choice but to make a season two," he stated.

Meanwhile, "Squid Game" has established itself as an awards heavyweight. Netflix is currently in the midst of an FYC campaign during the Emmy season, following a slew of nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including wins for Lee Jung-jae and HoYeon Jung in their respective gendered categories for outstanding performances in a drama series.

On July 12, nominations will be announced.
