Julius Maiyo, Keiyo North Deputy County Commissioner, told the media that Muthee's boyfriend, who is being investigated as the prime suspect in the crime, escaped to Ethiopia on April 16, the same day the athlete was murdered.

Muthee could have died by strangulation, according to the authorities, because there were no obvious injuries on his decomposing body.

"The slain athlete had visited the Ethiopian boyfriend on Saturday and we are suspecting that she was killed the same night because the body is decomposing," Maiyo stated.

"The police got reports that the Ethiopian had killed his girlfriend and when the officers came to their residence, they found it locked. They broke the door and found the decomposing body," Maiyo added.

The police, according to Maiyo, traced his recent phone conversations to Ethiopia.

He stated that extradition orders were still being sought so that the suspect could be questioned and charged.

Muthee's coworkers and acquaintances talked highly of her, praising her hard work and dedication to her profession. They also disclosed she was a single mother.

They were enraged that Muthee died just as she was reaching the pinnacle of her career.

Muthee's death came at a time when athletes were enduring gender-based violence awareness campaigns in the aftermath of the murder of athlete Agnes Tirop, with investigations indicating that her husband may have been involved.
