In a letter dated 10th of march 2022, addressed to the party, Sonko said that he voluntarily made the decision and he was not forced in anyway.

“Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation as a member of the Jubilee party effective March 10, 2022. This is in exercise of my rights to belong to a political party of my choice as enshrined under the constitution of Kenya,” read part of the letter.

Sonko, however, went on to thank the party for the support they accorded him during his tenure in office before he was impeached from office. Sonko still held that his impeachment was conducted illegally.

“I would like to thank the party leadership for the support that they provided me while I served as a Governor of the Nairobi City County before I was unlawfully removed from office and hope that they can help change this country for the better. I wish the party and the esteemed members all the best in the future,” Sonko added.

Sonko’s resignation from the Uhuru Kenyatta led party comes days after he was banned from travelling to the US on corruption allegations. The ban further extended to his immediate family members.

This week also, Sonko had announced that he would be on the ballot to secure the gubernatorial seat in the coming august polls.
