Agriculture CS, Peter Munya revealed in a statement on Friday 1 that fertilizer prices have grown to levels that have impacted both large and small-scale farmers in the recent year.

According to him, the rise in fertilizer prices is due to producer countries such as China, Russia, and Turkey restricting exports to protect their farmers, which is compounded by heavy consumption demand from India, Brazil, and the United States buying up large quantities, reducing available global supplies.

"This increased procurement of fertilizer has also led to competition for shipping, raising bulk and container cargo rates to high levels," Munya explained.

He went on to say that the plant would subsidize 2.28 million 50-kilogram bags of fertilizer for farmers growing food crops.

A 50kg bag of DAP fertilizer cost Ksh3,200 last year at this time; now it costs Ksh6,000.

The funds made up will subsidize farmers raising food crops by 114,000 metric tonnes (2,280,000 x 50kg bags).

These amounts will allow for the cultivation of 1.13 million acres.

DAP is suggested to be subsidized at Ksh2,800 for a 50kg bag; CAN at Ksh1,950; UREA at Ksh2,700; NPK at Ksh3,000; MOP at Ksh2,500; and Sulphate of Ammonia at Ksh2,500.
