The future of the new education system in Kenya – Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is under threat after the Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi threatened to file a court case challenging its implementation.

CBC is being rolled out gradually in the country’s education system – and as it is today, it is on course to replace the 8-4-4 system.

Already a number of Kenyan children have started learning under the new system but there have been concerns over its high cost, especially on the side of parents for textbooks and learning materials.

It is for this reason that the LSK boss says he will file a court case, pointing out that an education system in any country should not be expensive.

Havi who has filed numerous cases against the government during his tenure further claims CBC was introduced by thE Ministry of Education to experiment on children.

“I have heard your cries parents, guardians and teachers. The petition challenging CBC will be filed in Court next week. The education system in Kenya should not be an expensive, inefficient and ineffective experiment with our children and their future as is our leadership,” the LSK president noted in a tweet.

The government rolled out CBC in 2017 under which the education system will change to 2-6-3-3 replacing the 8-4-4 system which has been in place for the past 32 years in Kenya.

The new system signals a change of emphasis from the tradition of chalk-and-talk teaching, to focus on the student, by learning in groups and not just memorizing facts, but developing competencies, and understanding core values and important issues.
