According to President Uhuru, Kibaki died on the night of Thursday, April 21,

The President remembered his predecessor as a leader who guided the country's economic growth, democracy, and the well-being of all Kenyans.

Kibaki served as the third president of the Republic of Kenya from 2002 to 2013.

President Kenyatta has declared a state of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast until a state funeral for Kibaki is held.

"The nation will observe a period of the national morning from today until sunset that President will be buried," President Kenyatta stated.

Uhuru announced that the late President Kibaki will be given a state funeral, while also asking Kenyans to remember the late President's contributions to Kenya.

"Kibaki championed the realization of the objectives of the East African Community Common Market of trade liberalization for the citizens of the partner states of the East African Community. His inclusive spirit and conviction for economic empowerment transcended the territory of Kenya towards cross-border economic stability. May his memory be observed and example emulated" President Uhuru announced.

Kibaki passed away at the age of 90.

He was the only former president still alive.
