This followed the government's announcement that it would subsidize unga production for one month. The Ministry of Agriculture has stated that it will cover a portion of the production costs, lowering maize flour prices from KSh 230 for a 2kg packet.

The government waived import duties on maize and animal products for three months until the next harvest in June 2022. However, maize millers said the move would only cause minor changes in unga prices. Maize flour prices were reduced by KSh 2 per 2kg packet, from KSh 200 to KSh 198.

Following the maize shortage, maize flour prices reached an all-time high of KSh 200 per 2kg packet. Millers predicted the problem would persist as Tanzania increased the export cost from KSh 27,000 to KSh 52,000.

Earlier, Kenyan politician Dennis Itumbi revealed through his social media accounts that the price of maize flour would drop significantly starting today at 2:00 p.m., but the price would not last long.
